Colleges and Universities in Thaumaturgaea

From The Archives of the Marquise
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Magic colleges and universities in the Thaumaturgaea Story are institutions for continued education, specifically after a person has graduated from high school or magic school. Whether it is referred to as college or university (or other terms) can differ from region to region, and sometimes depend on what manner or amount of courses they offer.

These institutions can offer various courses like the ones listed here. Much like normal colleges, some of them can specialize in a specific field of study. One example is agricultural colleges vs. herbology colleges.

Most beings will go straight to a guild or coven after magical high school, which would be the equivalent of going to a trade school or technical college. However, some may want to expand their knowledge and study in specialized ways, which can be done at magical colleges.

Note that the example college courses listed here have general numbers and abbreviations associated with them. These can differ from college to college. Some of these may also be broken up into two or more courses.

General Education

As with many colleges, there are general education courses that need to be taken. In magic colleges there are two kinds: non-magical and magical.

The non-magical course can be supplemented by AP or equivalent courses in high school. That is, from a non-magical high school. This is because magic high schools do not typically offer AP/advanced non-magical classes, just the Study Hall to make sure people keep up their math/reading/etc. skills.

Non-magical general education courses are merely meant to ensure students have basic knowledge of math, science, language, etc. for non-magical purposes on a college level, like taxes. The magical courses are intended to be the basis of magical knowledge, and can be supplemented by a diploma and sufficient grades from a magical high school.

While the non-magic general education can be completed whenever the student chooses, the magical general education courses must be completed before moving on to more specific and advanced courses. This is because the magical general education courses act as a basis for magical knowledge, and are related to further courses in one way or another.

Non-magical General Education

The following is a list of non-magical general education courses offered at most magic colleges. The base courses are required for graduation if they are not already supplemented by previous credits. The subsets of each base course are additional electives that students can take if they want to.

Bachelor-level Degrees

The following are specific tracks and degrees that students can take, along with the advanced courses under them. Students can take them as a major or minor. If taken as a minor, only part of the courses are required in order to qualify for a minor in a given degree. If take as a major, more courses are required to quality for the degree. In some cases, this usually means having to take all of the listed courses, or at least all of the base courses and a specific number of subset courses.

Courses that are listed as a subset of another course can be taken only when the main course is successfully completed. Courses that are listed as subsets of the same course can be taken in any order once their base course is completed.

Similar to how doctorates allow the official use of doctor as a person's title, getting a magic degree allows for a person to official use the title of "maven". In general, this is basically a gender-neutral way of saying that a person is an expert in a specific field. In the Thaumaturgaea setting, it is specifically used to refer to people with magic degrees, or otherwise a person with significant amounts of experience with magic outside of college.

Note that these specialized Masters course may have limited availability depending on the magical university (if they focus on anything in particular), but the previous bachelors magical degrees are usually available at every magical college/university.
